This admission marks a significant escalation in the conflict and a potential shift in strategy.
“Hoy, el comandante en jefe Oleksandr Syrskyi informó sobre la situación en el frente, incluyendo nuestra presencia en las regiones de Kursk y Belgorod”, declaró Zelensky. “Continuamos realizando operaciones activas en las zonas fronterizas en territorio enemigo, y esto es absolutamente justo: la guerra debe volver de donde vino”. This statement underscores Ukraine’s determination to take the fight to Russia.
According to Zelensky, the “main objective” of these operations is to protect the Ukrainian border regions of Sumy and Kharkiv, and to “alleviate pressure” on other parts of the extensive front line, particularly in the eastern Donetsk region. Ironically, on Sunday, Russia claimed its troops seized the village of Basivka in the Sumy region, opposite Kursk, and were attacking Ukrainian forces in other settlements.
Evidence suggests Ukrainian forces have made advancements. The Institute for the Study of War reported on March 29th that geolocated footage confirmed Ukrainian troops had advanced towards the village of Popovka, near the Russia-Ukraine border.
Moscow has acknowledged incursions into Belgorod, accusing Ukrainian troops of attempting to penetrate the western part of the region. Russian authorities allege these actions by Kyiv are intended to create a negative atmosphere amid ongoing discussions between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
While Ukrainian forces have conducted occasional cross-border raids into Belgorod since 2023, often involving Russian volunteer soldiers fighting on the Ukrainian side, these previous incursions were typically short-lived and lacked strategic military significance. The current operation appears to be a more sustained effort, reminiscent of the Kursk incursion of August 2024.
However, as Ukrainian troops push into Belgorod, they have also retreated from Kursk, where Russian forces have retaken the key logistics hub of Sudzha and a substantial portion of territory previously held by Ukrainian forces.
Key questions remain unanswered: How many troops are currently involved? What level of importance does Kyiv place on this new Belgorod incursion? And how long does Ukraine intend to maintain this operation?
This development unfolds against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, launched in 2022, with Moscow currently controlling approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has voiced his discontent with the situation, accusing Russia of indiscriminate bombing.
Adding to the somber atmosphere, Zelensky’s hometown of Krivoy Rog recently held funerals for 20 people, including nine children, killed in a Russian missile strike.
In his nightly address, Zelensky expressed gratitude to various Ukrainian army units, including the 225th Assault Regiment deployed in the Belgorod region. “Well done, guys! I am proud of everyone who fights for Ukraine!” he declared.
Chinese Citizens Captured Fighting for Russia
In a separate, potentially explosive development, Zelensky has announced that Ukrainian forces have captured Chinese citizens fighting alongside Russian troops in eastern Ukraine. This marks the first known instance of Chinese nationals being taken prisoner during the conflict.
Zelensky stated he has instructed his Foreign Minister to contact his counterpart in Beijing for an official explanation, accusing China of aligning itself with Russia in the war.
“This is another country that is militarily supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It is another one, after Iran and the North Korean army,” Zelensky criticized. “But there is a difference: the North Koreans fought against us on the Kursk front (the Russian region), while the Chinese fight on Ukrainian territory,” he added, stating he expects a response from the United States and Europe.
These captured Chinese fighters were reportedly part of a unit of six battling against Ukrainian soldiers in the Donetsk region. Zelensky claims documents and bank cards have confirmed the men’s identities and nationalities.
A video shared by Zelensky allegedly shows one of the captured Chinese combatants in military uniform with his hands tied. The circumstances surrounding their involvement remain unclear.
Zelensky stated that Kyiv has “information that there are significantly more Chinese citizens” fighting alongside Russian troops and has tasked intelligence agencies with clarifying the facts. Ukraine views the participation of Chinese citizens in the Russian army as undermining trust in Beijing as a responsible permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Moscow has also been recruiting mercenaries from countries around the world, including Cuba, India, Yemen, and various African nations. North Korea has also reportedly sent troops to aid Russia, some of whom have suffered casualties in the Kursk region.
