China Strikes Back: Escalates Trade War with Massive Tariff Hike on US Goods

The trade war between China and the United States is escalating dramatically. Beijing just announced a massive tariff hike, increasing levies on US goods from 34% to a staggering 84%. This retaliatory measure comes in direct response to President Trump’s latest tariff escalation, which saw the US imposing a cumulative 104% tax on Chinese imports.

The Chinese Ministry of Finance stated the new tariffs will take effect on April 10th, framing the move as a direct consequence of the US’s “repeated error” of raising tariffs on Chinese products. This escalation signals a significant hardening of positions on both sides.

Beyond tariffs, China’s Ministry of Commerce is tightening the screws further. They’ve added twelve US firms to their export control list, impacting companies involved in a range of sectors, including drone technology (BRINC), aeronautics (Novotech), machinery (Marvin Engineering Company), and radar systems (Echodyne).

The Ministry also blacklisted six additional US companies, designating them as “unreliable entities.” This list includes military equipment suppliers like Cyberlux and Sierra Nevada, further restricting trade and technology transfer. The stated objective is to prevent the exchange of items with “dual-use” capabilities – those applicable in both civilian and military contexts.

Trump’s Trade War Intensifies

President Trump’s decision to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods, on top of existing levies, effectively raises the total tax burden on Chinese products to 104%. This aggressive move has clearly triggered a forceful response from Beijing.

Previously, China had already imposed a 34% tariff on US goods after the initial US tariffs were announced. The tit-for-tat escalation has created a climate of uncertainty and disruption for businesses on both sides of the Pacific.

Trump recently claimed that China “desperately” wants a trade deal but doesn’t know “how to start” negotiations. He further stated that the White House is awaiting a call from Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Beijing Vows to “Fight to the End”

China has consistently maintained that it will “fight to the end” in this trade war. The country asserts it possesses the “firm will” and “abundant resources” to respond “with determination” if the US persists in escalating economic and trade restrictions.

The Chinese Ministry of Finance emphasized that Trump’s tariffs “severely violate China’s legitimate rights and interests” and “seriously damage the multilateral trading system based on rules.” The coming days and weeks will be critical in determining whether a path towards de-escalation can be found, or if the trade war will continue to intensify, impacting global economies.
